Hornsea is a fair way out. Does that matter?
Not to us. It all goes by post, so the drive travels and you stay put. Leeds is 70.7 miles and about an hour and a half of driving from Hornsea, and there is no station at this end, which is exactly why tracked insured post suits the job. It gets looked at the day it lands, free, and the postage home is ours.
My external drive of photos has stopped. Any chance?
Often, yes. The commonest thing to arrive here is a portable drive carried about for ten years that has finally stopped spinning up or begun to click. Leave it unplugged from now on, because every retry takes a little more off it. Once it reaches the bench it is imaged first and worked on from the copy.
The season's bookings are on one office machine. Now what?
Pull the plug at the wall and stop there. If it is a NAS, lift the disks out, number them by the bay they came from, and send the bare drives — the enclosure is no use to us. A box left powering up and retrying only gets worse. Say which files the season turns on.
Is there a train it could go on?
No. Hornsea has no station and has not had one for a long while — the old line is the Hornsea Rail Trail now, and the nearest platforms are at Beverley or Hull. So it is tracked insured post from the counter in town, or drive it to Leeds yourself and hand it over.
