The symptom · it does not appear

Undetected drives, Hull. The computer cannot see it, which says nothing about whether the files are there.

Drives arrive here from all over Hull and the East Riding with one line attached: the computer will not see it. That line describes a circuit. It says nothing about your files. Ask three questions in turn. Does the BIOS list it? Does Disk Management show it? Does File Explorer open it? The first one it fails names what has broken: electronics, firmware or the volume itself.

Go stage by stage and the fault gives itself away.

No BIOS entryThe bottom of the ladder. A fault this low is electrical or firmware — burnt tracks, a diode that has gone short, service-area code the drive cannot load. The platters are almost always untouched.
In the BIOS, not in Disk ManagementThe drive is answering properly. What is damaged is further up: the partition table, or the file system's own records. Both are repaired on the image.
Missing only from ExplorerThe volume will not mount, though everything under it is healthy. That is file-system work, and it usually goes well.
Nothing anywhereOn a spinning disk this normally points to a surge that shorted the TVS diode across the supply rail. A replacement board on its own will not help. Your disk's calibration is stored on the ROM chip of the burnt board, and that chip has to be desoldered and fitted to the donor.

Find the stage it fails at

Nothing is dismantled and nothing is left spinning. A few minutes at the BIOS, a look in Disk Management, then Explorer, and the work falls into one of three: mend the electronics, rebuild a service area, or repair the file system on a copy.

Repair the electronics

The shorted diode is lifted off and replaced. Where the board cannot be saved, a donor stands in and your own ROM chip is transferred to it, because the adaptive values in that chip were taken from your platters and match nothing else.

Take an image first, work on that

As soon as the drive responds, a sector-by-sector image is made. The work then happens only on that image, and your own drive goes to a shelf untouched.

You are not billed while you are still thinking. The list of what came off the drive goes to you first, and the invoice waits on your word. Files go home on media bought in for the job, with the postage back on us. We keep the job open until you have opened them on your own machine.

What turns up most often

  • Each stage blames a different part — a disk can fail at the BIOS, or get into Disk Management and no further, or turn up in Explorer and refuse to mount even so. Knowing which of the three it is does most of the diagnosis.
  • The TVS diode is there to blow — it shorts across the rail to swallow the spike, which is exactly why a drive that does nothing at all usually has platters in good order.
  • The same model number is not the same board — calibration data specific to one set of platters lives on the original PCB's ROM chip, so a donor board arriving with its own chip is tuned for a different disk.
  • Flash breaks differently — a dead controller or a firmware panic sits between you and NAND that is perfectly healthy. A WD Blue SA510 reporting 0MB is the everyday example. SSDs have their own page.

The point to take away: almost every drive that reaches us unseen by its computer has a fault in its electronics or its firmware. Those parts announce the disk to the machine; they are not the parts that store what you saved. A drive that will not appear is describing its own hardware, nothing else.

The TVS diode went short and the WD stopped dead

An overnight power cut, and next morning the desktop listed one disk where there had been two. The WD was not turning and the BIOS had no entry for it. The board had burnt out at the TVS diode. Its ROM was moved to a donor PCB, and a complete image came off the drive within two days of the parcel landing.

The drive shows no sign of life. Can it be recovered?

Usually. The board is either mended or swapped, and whatever killed it rarely gets past the electronics to the platters or the flash. A drive doing nothing at all is one of the more predictable faults here.

Windows wants to initialise the disk. Do I let it?

No. Never. That dialogue lays an empty partition map on top of the map that lists where your files are. Click no, unplug the drive, and let an engineer see it before anything else gets near it.

The BIOS shows nothing. Does that mean it is finished?

No. A disk the BIOS cannot see has lost the means of announcing itself, not the contents. The break is in the electronics or in the service-area code. Your files are held in neither of those.

The power went off and it died. Is that why?

Very likely. A protection diode takes the spike. It is put there to go short and blow before anything behind it can. You have lost some electronics. What you wrote to the disk is untouched.

A drive left switched off loses nothing more.

Leave it switched off. A failing drive has a limited number of starts in it, and each one spends a little more. The free diagnosis will say which files can be read.
