What a hard drive mends, and what only gets propped up.

Electronics: a real repairMost drives that look completely dead have a failed board behind them — a shorted TVS diode, or a USB bridge chip that has given up. All three are repairable in the everyday sense of the word. That is the good news.
Firmware: mends, given the kitDamage the translator or a single service-area module and a mechanically sound drive will show 0GB, or fall off the bus altogether. Reaching those structures takes purpose-built firmware hardware. No download will do it.
Mechanics: one pass onlyA donor head stack, a seized spindle freed, heads lifted off the platter they have settled on — each one buys enough life for a single complete copy and no more. The drive does not outlive the job it was revived for.

Whatever comes off is checked, listed, and written to media bought new for your job. The drive was only ever the container. If it is still good for light use we will tell you, and if it is done we will tell you that too.

What turns up most often

  • 'Repair' is rarely what people mean — almost everyone who uses the word wants the contents back, not a spinning disk. We work to what you need rather than what you said, and tell you which of the two the drive is actually a case for.
  • The swap nobody tells you about — a laptop that comes back from a 'repair' running nicely has usually had an empty drive put in it. Ask what happened to the original, and ask while the bill is still unpaid.
  • Electrical faults cost least — a surge kills the board and leaves the platters untouched, which makes them the fastest work on the bench and the cheapest to quote.
  • New heads are not a fix — they buy reading time and nothing like reliability, and anyone who says otherwise is booking your next failure for you.

Written down, and held to: boards and firmware do mend. Heads and motors are patched to survive one copy and not an hour more. A scored platter is unreadable — here, and in every other lab, whatever an advert says. None of that has changed, and drives with IBM, HGST, Hitachi and Fujitsu on the label keep arriving from Hull, Beverley, Bridlington and Grimsby. The shop handed the laptop back working, a new disk fitted and empty. The old one, written off as beyond help, sat clicking in a drawer in a Hull student flat. It got donor heads. Two days on, the essays and the photographs went onto the shop's new disk.

Can a broken hard drive actually be repaired?

Some of it. The board and the firmware genuinely mend — a rebuilt PCB, a service area straightened out. Anything with moving parts is another story. Donor heads are fitted to do one thing: survive a single pass over the platters. After that the drive is scrap and does not go back in the post. The files do, on media we buy in.

Do I want a repair, or do I want recovery?

A repair is about the hardware — the customer leaves with a working device. Recovery is about the contents, and the hardware is treated as disposable. When a disk has genuinely failed, only the second answer is honest. It is why a laptop can come back from a shop quick and quiet, with none of your files on it.

Will a replacement circuit board not do the job?

Almost never, and never by itself. A small ROM on the board carries adaptive values measured against your mechanism alone. Move that chip onto the replacement and the drive reads. Leave it behind and the heads return noise. That is a soldering job, and it needs the right bench and the right kit.

Drives are cheap now. Why pay this much to fix one?

Cheap drives are exactly why the comparison fails. Nobody is selling you a drive here. The charge is for what was on the one that stopped, handed back on hardware that works. Put the same money into keeping the failed disk alive and you end up with a part you would not trust with anything.

A drive left switched off loses nothing more.

Leave it switched off. A failing drive has a limited number of starts in it, and each one spends a little more. The free diagnosis will say which files can be read.
