The BIOS Finds It. Windows Locks Up.

What causes it.
Both are telling the truth. They are asking different questions. The BIOS wants a name and nothing more: model, capacity, a handful of parameters. Any disk that still turns and still talks to its own controller can answer that. Windows wants the contents — the partition table, the filesystem records, then sector after sector handed back before a deadline of well under a second. Miss it and Windows drops the drive. Passing the first test and failing the second means the drive has failed at the only job it has. There are usually two reasons. Either the firmware collapses as soon as user data is requested, or the surface is worn far enough that reads keep running past their allowance.

Decide which it is before it spins again
The firmware was in good order. Its service area read back cleanly and no module was missing. What had failed was the reading. Sectors did come out, one at a time, several seconds apart. That covers the entire symptom: Windows allows well under a second per sector, and after that it stops waiting.
Copy it with the timer switched off
Windows will not wait for a slow drive. A bench imager will, and that is nearly the whole of the difference. As long as the disk keeps replying, the imager keeps asking. Timeouts were opened right out, stalls handled with measured resets, and the read rate allowed to drop to whatever the worn areas would give. It ran for several days and finished the lot.
Everything else is done on the image
The partition table and NTFS structures came off the finished image, and the volume was assembled again from those. What had been shut for weeks opened on the first attempt — ledgers, invoices, receipts.

A single worn band refused its sectors right to the finish, and a few scanned receipts were sitting in it. That was the extent of the loss. Every invoice was there, every VAT workbook was there, and the whole nine years went back to Doncaster on a new drive.
