The Socket Was Not Making That Noise.
Two years of folded card packed under the cable, and everyone in the place knew the routine: push it in, then lift it a bit to the left
. It worked, so nobody questioned it. Then the Backup Plus started making a noise it had never made before. Light on, one flat note with no end to it, and not a machine in the Bridlington workshop would see the drive. Somebody up the road offered to fit a new socket. He phoned us first.

What causes it.
This is the trap. Where something has gone wrong in the same place for years, that is where everyone keeps looking. A tired socket does real damage of its own: copies that stop half way, a drive that drops off the desktop and reappears, files that come back with holes in them. What it cannot do is reach inside and hold the spindle still. Poor contact costs you the signal. It does not drop anything solid into the mechanics. An unbroken note that only stops when the power does means the motor is pushing at something that will not give, and in a pocket drive that is almost always the head stack, lying flat on the discs and gripping. The fault had moved from the plug to under the lid. A new socket would have fixed the half of it that had stopped mattering.

The stages.
Sorting one fault from the other
Two minutes on a current-limited supply settled it. Current went up and kept going up, the motor straining at something that would not turn, and then the drive cut out. Quiet. A stall, with no room to argue about it. The plug story was true and beside the point here. Off came the case either way, and that ended the socket's part in the job.
Stack lifted, and the case set aside
Opened in clean air, the heads were where the noise had said: down on the discs, well away from the ramp they should have parked on. Off came the stack for a look under the microscope, and the ring of surface it had been resting on was unmarked. After that the drive ran on an ordinary SATA port. Two years of packing a cable made no difference to any of it, and nobody put an iron near the socket.
A single pass on a solid connection
Free to turn, the drive handed over the lot overnight in one pass, from the first sector to the last. It never dropped off the bus and never reset, and the stopping and starting he had put up with for years did not happen once. That was probably the best read it had ever managed, and certainly its final one.
How it finished.
Ten years of the workshop came home, checked item by item: photographs taken as each job progressed, scanned handbooks, invoices for parts. A second copy went to his brother's house, and the bench copy gets checked against it. The folded card went in the bin.
