I Had the Cover Off Hunting for Stuck Heads.
He had admitted the worst of it before the parcel got here. A storm sat over Drypool one evening and knocked the power out on his street twice inside ten minutes. After that the WD Blue in his desktop did nothing but tick once a second and that was your lot

What causes it.
The reason people open drives is that the drive still runs afterwards. That is the trap. A modern disk is a sealed assembly, and the steel cover is part of the seal, not a lid you lift. Inside it the heads run a few nanometres over platters spinning at speed — a gap smaller than anything floating round a kitchen. Undo the screws and nothing obvious goes wrong that night. The bill arrives later. Whatever the electricity killed is still dead, and now there is a layer of household dust across the surfaces your photographs live on.

Clean the surfaces before anything spins
He did the right thing next: no power to it, screws back in, drive in a bag. Under the microscope the top platter carried a fair load. Grit, and fibres from a tea towel or a jumper — nothing a breather filter would have let through. All of that came off before the spindle saw any current. Spin a dirty platter and each speck turns into a cutter beneath the head.
Then measure what the surge had killed
Clean surfaces are the only ones that read honestly. Heads, motor and platters all came back sound, which put the fault in the electronics and on one component: the motor driver chip, killed by the surge. A drive that never reaches speed retries about once a second, and heard through a metal case that retry is much like a head fault. He was right to be worried. He was hearing a drive describe itself wrongly.
Fit the board, then read gently
A donor board of matching revision went on with the ROM moved across from the burnt one. Without that chip a replacement board has no idea which drive it is fitted to. Imaging then ran at a reduced rate with retries capped, because kitchen air had already passed over those surfaces and nothing undoes that. It still read the whole way through.
How it finished.
Every scan came back — three winters of photographs of Drypool and the people who live there. He got nearer to losing them than we let on at the time. Two copies exist now, and the Torx bits have gone back in a drawer.
