It Fell With the Copy Running, and Took the Socket.

A journalist in Goole was moving two years of recorded interviews off an ageing laptop — docks, shops, the town's two hundredth year — and then the cable caught her foot. The Canvio came off the desk with the copy running and the socket tore away with the lead. It will now grumble once and stop, and nothing in the house will see it. She was right about the timing.

What causes it.

It all turns on a single question. Was the disc turning at the moment it fell? A drive at rest keeps its heads on a ramp outside the platter, away from any recorded surface, and a knock off a desk at that point frequently does no harm whatever. Mid-copy there is no ramp in it at all. The heads are flying over the data, the arm is travelling, and the whole thing is over well before the firmware has any chance to pull them back. Two falls that look identical can produce two very different bills. This one was the expensive kind.

See what the fall did before anything spins

Under clean air the stack looked the way mid-flight impacts usually do: the harm never spreads itself evenly. Two sliders had obviously taken the knock, while the others looked more or less untouched. One narrow band of scuffing followed the path the arm had been dragged along — real damage, shallow, and nothing near the deep ring that ends a case the moment the lid comes off.

Fit new heads, survey, then set the reading order

A donor stack was matched and fitted, and the platters were then surveyed properly. That decided the running order. The healthy areas came off at speed while the new heads were fresh; the scuffed band waited until last, to be crossed at low speed with resets and power control to hand.

The scuffed band is damage already done

That band — whatever sat under the sliders when the drive met the floor — was left until last and taken slowly, with the retry budget opened right up. Most of it came back. Windows was never let near the drive at any point: each sector got one request from the imager, never a second.

How it finished.

Nearly the whole archive went home. What it cost was a handful of interviews sitting in the scuffed band, each one listed in the report by name. The folder the laptop had got halfway through came out of the image intact, hours after the drive itself had gone back in its box.

The gist: A drive is at its weakest while it is writing. If yours goes on the floor, pull the power and leave it there — every further attempt costs you platter.
