The Supply Was New. The Lead Was Not.
He pressed the button once and heard a bang, then that smell of burnt electronics
. A new graphics card had wanted more current, so a wedding filmmaker in the Avenues had put a bigger supply in his edit machine and reused the drive lead already in there — tied down inside the case since I built it

What causes it.
Two plugs can look identical and be wired nothing alike. At the drive end the pin order is fixed by specification, so that half of a lead is safe. The other end is the maker's own business: it varies from range to range, changes again when a range is replaced, and there is nothing on the outside to show it. So the lead slid in, and the pins expecting five volts were given twelve. After that the board did the job it is built for. Its TVS diode shorted itself out, took the rail down to earth and burnt through, and nothing got past it into the drive.

How far the spike got
Ten minutes under the microscope, with a current-limited supply behind it, told us the lot: a regulator burnt out, a protection diode shorted through, scorch marks round both. The preamplifier is the part that would have ended this job. It sits inside the sealed body, mounted on the head stack, and nothing electrical had got within reach of it.
A board that matches, and the chip that has to move
We had a board of the same revision, and its own eight-pin ROM was left where it was. The chip came off the burnt board and went onto the donor instead. That chip is what marries a board to one drive: the values inside it were measured off this head stack and these platters when the drive was built. Fit a board without it and the thing spins up, sounds healthy and returns rubbish.
Get the copy off while it holds
Three deliveries were already booked, so the Data Extractor was wired in and waiting before the rebuilt board went on. The mechanics had felt none of it. Read speed held flat all night, no fresh defects appeared, and the whole image was done by morning.

All three edits came off the copy intact, and each couple got their film on the day they had been promised. Every lead from the old supply travelled home alongside it, taped into a bundle and labelled, so none of them turns up inside another machine.
