One Drop, and After That a Tick.
There was no other copy of any of it. The edited JPEGs had been delivered to the couples and wiped off the laptop months earlier, so two full wedding seasons were living on one pocket drive. That drive slid out of a half-zipped bag and landed on a driveway in Goole. It ticks half a dozen times and then shuts up

What causes it.
Servo patterns are written onto every platter at the factory, and a head reads them to know which track it is sitting over. Put the stack out of true and those patterns come back as noise. The arm sweeps across, recognises nothing, returns to the park ramp and has another go. That loop is the tick. The LED proves nothing either way: it lights whenever the USB board has power, healthy mechanism or ruined one. He tried it once more, got the same performance out of it, and left it alone after that. Leaving it alone is why the archive still exists.

The stages.
Jacket off, bridge removed, an ordinary SATA disk
Peel off the rubber jacket, take the little USB bridge out, and a 2.5in SATA disk is what remains — the same as thousands of others, apart from having been on a driveway. Running it from our own supply means the spinning is ours to decide. The platters move when there is a reason to move them, not because a laptop went hunting for a volume.
Donor stack in, then a survey before any reading
The donor was the same family of drive on the same firmware revision. With its stack fitted the patient gave its own identity back. Still no reading. A survey came ahead of that: every head clocked and scored on how cleanly it pulled data, so the order came from this disk rather than from a standard recipe. One head held steady. The other ran slow and kept stumbling, so its surface went to the back.
Good surface first, the unreliable one after
Reading began on the good side, timeouts kept short, power cycled whenever it stalled. Most of the archive was therefore in the bag before the stumbling head had been asked for a thing. Its platter went last, at whatever rate it would give. Six days, bench to sign-off. When a drive has met a driveway, slow work is not a compromise; it is how the job gets to the end.
How it finished.
Nothing was signed off until each CR3 had been opened and rendered on screen. To a photographer a filename in a listing means nothing if the picture behind it will not draw. The set went back out on new media, and a second copy went onto another drive the same afternoon. Two wedding seasons now sit in two places instead of one.
