What causes it.
Two things settled most of this while the parcel was still in transit. The disk turned, and nothing in the office would show it. A failing disk usually gives some notice. It slows down. It takes on a sound nobody has heard from it before. It drops out and comes back over a fortnight, then goes altogether. This drive sounded like any ordinary working day right up to the end, and then it was gone. That takes the fault off the mechanism and puts it on the electronics standing between the disk and the computer, and in a pocket enclosure that is nearly always the bridge board. There was a year-end due, plus two VAT returns, all inside the same fortnight. So the distance between those two answers was one awkward week, or a practice holding no records at all. It went to the front of the queue.

Out of the enclosure that day, because the diary left no other option
The parcel was opened and within the hour the bare disk was on the bench. Everything it was asked, it answered properly. The motor held speed, firmware replied straight away, every head read clean. With the mechanism in the clear, the bridge board held the fault by elimination, and imaging was running before lunch.
The key lives on the board, not the disk
On these units the encryption key is held on the USB board and nowhere else, so a dead board is not something you can just throw away and replace. On this one, only the USB side had failed. Fed power directly from the bench it still answered, so it stayed in the chain for the imaging, and the volume mounted as if there had never been a problem.

She emailed her deadlines over and the checking followed that list exactly. The two VAT sets falling due soonest were read one ledger at a time, and those went back ahead of the rest. Everything else was verified after them. What a filing deadline wants is not the whole drive, only the right folders, on time.
How it finished.
Not one ledger was missing. Both returns went off a day early. One thing has changed since: the live client files copy onto a second drive each evening, before she shuts the laptop.
