Five Goes at It, Then Silence.
The last backup was never finished. She was moving house to Hornsea, the lead caught and came out part-way through, and the drive then spent the winter in a drawer with twelve years of camcorder tapes transferred onto it, and her mother’s photograph albums, scanned one page at a time. What causes it.
That small case holds two separate machines. One is the disk itself. The other is a board that presents the disk to a USB port in terms the port can follow, and it has a processor, memory and a view of its own health, all of its own. The board here was perfectly well. That is why the laptop bleeps, why something turns up in the device list at all, and why Windows will happily offer to eject hardware it has never read a byte from. The disk behind it never started. Firmware gives the motor a fixed number of attempts at bringing the platters up to speed, then stops, instead of driving current into a coil that is getting nowhere. Counting the whirrs means counting attempts off a fixed allowance. That is a limit, not an error code.

One more go, with the current on a meter
One attempt on the bench, with the supply limiting current, told us nearly everything. Five rises in draw, each one the motor leaning on whatever was holding it. Nothing at any point to say the platters had reached speed. Then firmware stopped trying. A spindle only acts like that when something solid is in the way. Her own attempts at home, as it turned out, had made nothing worse.
Take the lid off, and free the heads
With the lid off it was obvious what had happened. The cable came out mid-copy and the heads never made it to their parking ramp. They landed on the platter, and a winter in a cold drawer stuck them there. Each was worked loose by hand. Both contact marks went under a microscope before the motor was given any power.
One read end to end, on its own board
A My Passport keeps its encryption on the USB board and not on the platters, so that board was left wired in, with the imaging hardware sitting behind it — the path WD intended for this data all along. The read ran from first sector to last, nothing skipped, in one go. Heads that have been stuck to a platter once do not get a second cold start.
How it finished.
Everything was on it: the transferred tapes, every scanned album page, all of it. Back it went on fresh media, with one bit of advice. A second copy kept in the same house as the first is barely a second copy. The Passport is finished. It does no more work.
