Plug the Drive In and the Whole PC Stops.
It had got to be an old routine at Sutton-on-Hull. Once you plug the Seagate in, the PC locks solid with the lights on, and stays that way until the cable comes out
. A folder window will pop up and then it freezes while being drawn. Take the cable out and the PC will immediately come back. All eight years of interviews from a local history group were stored on this disk, and a whole Sunday was spent copying only one folder of their work before it froze, which gave him the information he was trying to get: the interviews are on there all right, it just will not let go of them

What causes it.
The PC was perfectly fine. There was simply a single disk that decided to place itself at the beginning of the queue and refused to budge. Storage requests are serviced in order. Therefore, if a drive ceases to respond Windows waits for a predetermined amount of time (the "timeout"), makes another request, waits for a second timeout, and all other items queued behind the non-responding drive wait also. This is why a spreadsheet located far removed from the Seagate locked up as well. The one folder he did manage to copy on Sunday provided enough information about the interviews that he needed; the file structure remained intact, and the interviews themselves were there. No data was deleted or lost. However, what the drive lost was the ability to transfer either data or files.

Stop drawing on what remains
This one folder was borrowed rather than retrieved; it was pulled from a system beyond its operational limits. The counters showed evidence of the problem; a large number of reallocations had occurred, and the pending list lengthened with each new attempt to recover. The only good option remaining for the drive was to leave it unpowered.
Two attempts at a bad sector, then move on
The imager operated under a limited budget; short timeouts were used, followed by two attempts. If these failed the imager recorded the address and moved on to the next location on the disk. Any clean sections were transferred at maximum speed. Anything that resisted was placed on a pending list for later recovery, in small segments using one head at a time; thus allowing the disk to release any additional data it might have had available, at its own pace.
Then listen to all of it
As soon as the image was loaded, the eight years of interviews popped out in chronological order. When we signed off the job it required us to sit through them instead of simply counting them, because although a file may be correctly sized down to the byte, it can include long stretches of nothingness (silence) that were never actually captured to the platter.
How it finished.
All folders were successfully copied and passed the listening test, including the one that was partially completed. After completing this process, we archived those files onto separate media and presented an exact duplicate set to the group’s secretary. The Seagate has since been taken out of service and the PC has functioned normally ever since.
