The Self-Check Says Healthy. The Full Read Gives Up.
The IdeaPad was sold and the buyer was waiting, so this started as a clear-out before handover. He ran Lenovo’s own diagnostics before erasing anything and got two answers that cannot both stand: the health test passes, but the long scan errors out every single time

What causes it.
SMART is a drive grading its own homework. It tallies a short list of counters and holds them against thresholds the maker set with plenty of room, which is how a heavily worn disk still prints the word pass. The extended test is a different exercise. It works across the whole surface and stops the moment it meets something it cannot get past. Both can be truthful and still disagree, and the disagreement is the useful part. Trust the test that went and touched the platters. Plenty of disks give no warning whatsoever. His had been giving one for months.

Look underneath the word healthy
The numbers under the verdict read a good deal worse. Reallocation had gone up every month for most of a year, a further batch of addresses sat unresolved, and one band of platter surrendered its data far slower than the ground to either side. None of it had passed a limit, so the drive kept passing itself. A great many disks die inside that gap.
He asked for three folders; the lot got copied
Pulling three folders to order means the heads jumping about over a surface that is already failing, because those files were scattered across every platter in the unit. One steady sweep end to end demands far less of the mechanics, and the awkward band can wait for a last pass. Meanwhile everything else is safe on the copy, taken while the drive still cooperates.
A directory listing proves nothing
The finished image gave up photographs, spreadsheets and letters. None of them was simply tallied. Each one was opened, because a filename reveals very little about the condition of the file behind it. The unreadable sectors were then checked off against the file table, and not one of them landed inside the three folders he wanted.

The three folders went back to Newland checked, and a full image of the remainder is held here. Before the IdeaPad went to its buyer, the old disk came out and an SSD went in. That disk had been going downhill a good deal quicker than its own report let on.
