What causes it.
The beep itself was no mystery. A spindle motor pulls at a platter pack that refuses to move, gives up, tries once more, then stops: current going in and nothing turning. The broken seal was the harder part. Once another pair of hands has been inside a drive, nobody can judge from outside it what condition those surfaces are in, and a lab claiming otherwise is betting with money that is not its own. Terms can still be settled while the cover is shut. Diagnosis costs nothing. A single written figure covers the job. Our exclusion for scored platters is set out where it can be read, not buried. And since this cover had to come off, half of parts and labour fell due at the start, the remainder only on a result.

The figure is settled before a tool is picked up
No screw moved until every number was in front of him: the reach of a free assessment, the commitment a written quotation puts on us, how scored platters change that figure, and the half becoming payable once a cover must come off. Where a seal is already broken we say so in the first email, not in small print at the foot of it. A blunt question got a blunt answer. Nobody, ourselves included, can judge surfaces they have not yet looked at.
Free the heads, then read around the old repair
Nothing turned because the sliders had come to rest flat on the surfaces and bonded there, holding the whole pack still. Off the drive and under the microscope, its history showed: a donor stack carrying a part number at odds with the label, an old contact mark running round the third platter, and particles of a kind that have no business inside a sealed assembly.
A single run, for as long as it lasts
Freed, the pack spun up and held speed, so the whole image came off in one unbroken read with the power left on throughout. Most of the disk moved at a reasonable rate. Across the old contact mark next to nothing remained, exactly as the quotation had warned.
How it finished.
Fifteen years of finished ceremony masters all came back, with most of the raw footage behind them. One folder, holding the first weddings he ever filmed, sat over the contact mark and gave up nothing, so five couples got an awkward phone call. That gap went into the quotation before he agreed to a thing.
