Nothing Wrong With the Disk.
A surveyor in Goole shut up his practice in 2012 and put the entire scanned client archive on an Iomega drive that was then about twelve months old. Power still reaches it. The light is on and I can hear it spinning
, he said. Yet it turns up on no machine as a drive. A shop had a look and could do nothing with it.

What causes it.
Two products live inside that plastic box, and they age at different rates. The disk at the back is an ordinary SATA unit, identical to what sits in a desktop tower. Ahead of it is a small board that translates SATA into USB, made cheaply and cooled by nothing but whatever air drifts past. So when a unit powers up, hums, and shows up nowhere at all, you suspect things in this order: the bridge first, the firmware second, the mechanism last. Broken platters belong at the very bottom of that list. A diagnosis is there to check the alarming answer rather than to endorse it.

The stages.
Undo the screws, put the disk on a port
Four screws and the Seagate Barracuda was out, sitting on a bench SATA port. Half a minute finished his theory off. The disk spun up, gave its model string in full, reported the right capacity, and answered vendor commands straight away. The noise that worried him was just a working drive resonating through thin plastic.
Read the logs before phoning him
A drive can look fine and still be quietly on the way out, so nobody rang him until the reallocated-sector count and the grown defect list had both been read. Neither held any surprises for a drive of that age that had not been worked hard. Sample reads across every zone came back first time, and not one had to be retried.
Image at full rate, then say what broke
The image came off clean, first sector to last, at the drive’s rated speed. Nothing had to be coaxed along, nothing was retried, and no fresh defects appeared. That left a single component holding the blame. The bridge board had aged out, while the disk it was built to serve carried on doing its job without fuss.
How it finished.
Scans were opened from each year the practice ran, and none of them had anything missing. The recovery went back to him on new media. That old Seagate has been put in a better enclosure and now does light duty as the second copy. Shattered platters did not come up again.
