Ten Years of Records, No Spares Left.

What causes it.
Age worked in two directions on this one. Nobody has held spares for a drive of that age in years, and no amount of phoning changes it. Magnetism, though, does not go out of stock. Whatever was written on those platters is still on them, and a mechanism handled carefully through one planned run will usually give it up. So the shop was not being unhelpful; it was being accurate. A place like that is set up to identify the fault and sell you the part. She got both, straight. Reading files off a mechanism that has stopped is a different job entirely: donor stock, filtered air, imaging kit that will not fit on a shop counter. An old drive tends to permit one attempt and punish the second, so the first has to count.

Assess it before anything is moved
Confirming the heads had gone took a few minutes; the rest of the survey was completed anyway. Bearing, surface condition, and a decade of defect history from a drive that had lived in a warm room under a printer. All of it said the same thing: go carefully. No switching it on for a look. No acting on a hunch. Any run still left in that mechanism would be planned on paper before it was used.
Finding a donor that agreed on more than the sticker
Nobody stocks parts for a drive of this vintage. You go hunting for one instead. This came off our own shelf. Matching the label is only where the search starts — the donor also has to sit in the same family, carry the same firmware generation and use the same preamp. Under laminar flow the new stack went on and the drive came back up, though not evenly. One head lagged behind the rest from the very first pass.
Gentle passes, and all the rest done on the image
Imaging ran in passes at a deliberately low rate. The doubtful head was saved for last and given a rest between its turns; a thin band of contact damage on that surface explained the lag. Everything from then on happened on the image, never on the drive. What came out of it was a proper HFS+ volume — one folder for each property, dates as they were written — and not a bin of numbered files.
How it finished.
Ten years of tenancy paperwork and the property photographs went back verified, in order and opening properly — bar a few pictures that had been sitting on the worst surface. We listed each of them by filename instead of letting them vanish quietly; nearly all are outside shots she can photograph again herself. Everything travelled back on a fresh drive, and a duplicate went with it. The MacBook is in a drawer, finished with.
