Fifteen Good Minutes, Then Nothing.
A Bricknell loft was being insulated. Out came years of boxes, and in one of them, tangled in old leads, was the Iomega. It worked for a quarter of an hour. It mounted, the folders appeared, it opened a couple of the slides Grandad had scanned
— then it left the desktop halfway through a click. Nothing she tried afterwards would read it. Each machine said corrupted and unreadable

What causes it.
‘Corrupted’ is what Windows says when a read comes back wrong. It reports the symptom and identifies nothing. The drive gave a better clue. It quit part-way through a read, and that timing argues for a worn mechanism rather than magnetism draining out of the platters. Moving parts dislike standing idle for years. The oil migrates, the bearings settle where they stand, the sliders go dull. Ask a drive in that state for one long unbroken read and you have chosen the worst opening move available.

The stages.
No more USB, and no more poking about
That drive never went near a USB port again. It ran on bench power, and the firmware came off first, because what the firmware says fixes the order of everything after it. Plenty of entries on the grown defect list already, and very few spares left. So one measured pass across the whole surface, and no rooting through folders beforehand to see what was on there.
Slow settings for a drive that had sat still
The imager was told to go easy. Read rate down, timeouts long, and a rest between zones so nothing had a chance to warm up. On those settings the surface came off quietly for the most part, and nearly every logged error sat with a single head across one narrow band.
Fix the ‘corruption’ on the copy, not on the original
Seen from the image, that alarming word amounted to very little. The weak head had handed back parts of the filesystem’s own bookkeeping and missed the rest. NTFS keeps second copies of much of it, and those covered the holes, so folders came back with their proper names and dates. What the head kept for good was a small number of scans.
How it finished.
The research, the old accounts and the slides were opened one at a time and checked. Nine scans came back incomplete. All nine are listed in the report by name, and nothing was rounded off. The Iomega is not going back in the loft. The archive sits on two drives now, and both get used.
